Mathematical Geometry of Regular Hexagonal Grids
A regular hexagonal grid is one of only three regular tilings of the Euclidean plane (alongside equilateral triangles and squares). Because every vertex is shared by three adjacent hexagons at 120° angles, the tessellation provides uniform packing and equal distances to all six neighboring cells.
- Side Length (s): Physical length of each of the 6 individual edges (e.g., exactly 5.000 mm).
- Flat-to-Flat Height (h): Distance between parallel top and bottom edges: h = s Ć ā3 ā 1.73205 Ć s (8.660 mm for s = 5 mm).
- Vertex-to-Vertex Width (w): Maximum horizontal span: w = 2 Ć s (10.000 mm for s = 5 mm).
- Column Center-to-Center Spacing: Īx = 1.5 Ć s = 7.500 mm.
- Single-Stroke Edge Rendering: Every interior shared edge is drawn exactly once in our vector PDF engine, preventing heavy double lines or ink pooling.
Primary Use Cases for Hexagonal Graph Paper
Organic Chemistry & Biochemistry
Students and researchers use 5 mm hexagonal grids as guides for drawing aromatic benzene rings, fused polycyclic hydrocarbons (such as naphthalene and anthracene), and biochemical sterol backbones with uniform bond angles.
Tabletop Roleplaying & Wargaming Maps
Game masters use 10 mm and 1/2 inch hex paper for overland wilderness travel, hex-crawl exploration, and tactical miniature skirmishes. Hex grids eliminate diagonal movement anomalies inherent in square grids.
Quilting & Tessellation Crafts
English Paper Piecing (EPP) quilters, mosaic tile setters, and beadworkers use hexagonal grids to plan geometric color arrangements, honeycombs, and interlocking radial patterns.
Board Game Prototyping
Independent game designers prototype strategy board games, resource distribution maps, and modular terrain tiles with clean geometric accuracy.

Print Scale Verification
For technical notes and gaming, physical scale matters. All PDFs generated on this site use pure Adobe PostScript point vectors (72 pt = 1 inch = 25.4 mm). To print with zero distortion:
- Download your selected sheet using the generator above.
- In your printer settings dialog, ensure scaling is set to 100% or Actual Size.
- Verify your printout with a physical millimeter ruler across 10 hex edges (should measure exactly 50 mm).
